Documentary on NC Constitutional Amendment Has Duke Ties

Clay Johnson and Sam Wells each have a role in WRAL's 'The Amendment,' airing Monday

WRAL-TV will air a documentary "The Amendment" Monday, April 23, at 7 p.m., which explores the controversial proposed amendment to North Carolina's constitution that addresses marriage and domestic unions.

Watch the trailer for "Amendment One."

The half-hour program includes contributions from at least two people with ties to Duke.

The producer of the show is Clay Johnson, a WRAL News documentary producer and visiting lecturer at Duke's Sanford School of Public Policy. Johnson won a regional Emmy Award last year for a documentary on the effects of hurricane Floyd.

One of the people interviewed in the documentary is Duke Chapel Dean Sam Wells. In the trailer for the documentary, Wells says, "This is a nation founded on freedom and on separation between church and state."

The referendum -- called Amendment One by opponents and the Marriage Amendment by supporters -- was the topic of a recent Duke "Office Hours" webcast interview.
