Sieburth Receives MLA Book Award
Stephanie Sieburth, a professor of romance studies, has won the Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize from the Modern Language Association
Stephanie Sieburth, a professor of romance studies at Duke, has won the Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize from the Modern Language Association.
The prize honors an outstanding book published in English or Spanish in the field of Latin American and Spanish literatures. It honors Sieburth's book "Survival Songs: Conchita Piquer's Coplas and Franco's Regime of Terror." The book examines the role of songs (coplas) that helped the defeated cop in post-Civil War Spain.
"Sieburth's book resonates with her control of the subject matter and reveals heroic and lyrical resilience in the face of insurmountable tragedies, the challenges of mourning, and the search for hope," the association said in a press release announcing the award.
The prize is one of 15 the association will award in January at its annual meeting in Austin, Texas.
