How Duke Employee Giving Impacts Health Care

Duke's Doing Good in the Neighborhood campaign helps provide healthcare internships

Zakeyah Gear has known she wanted to be a pediatrician since she was 8 years old.

“I want to know my patients by name,” she said. “I want to be able to help them, not only with medicine and care, but also as a person.”

Zakeyah is a senior at City of Medicine Academy (CMA). This summer, she interned at Duke Hospital as part of CMA’s health career internship program, completing 100 hours of work in an adult medicine inpatient unit.

Duke employees made it possible for Zakeyah and 11 other students to have internships at Duke Hospital and Duke Regional Hospital. Through Doing Good in the Neighborhood, Duke's employee giving campaign, students at the City of Medicine Academy spent 1,200 hours gaining tangible and invaluable healthcare experience.

The City of Medicine Academy’s partnership with Duke University Health System is just one of many health programs supported by Duke employees through Doing Good in the Neighborhood.
