Work at Duke? Six Things You Should Know

Tips to best use campus services and enhance your benefits

There are all sorts of reasons Duke is a top place to work, from its commuter-friendly options to its diversity and benefits. But sometimes there can be so much to learn about, it’s hard to keep up.

Working@Duke has compiled a list of helpful hints that can be useful to faculty and staff.  Think of it as a refresher on valuable things to know as an employee, whether it’s basic HR tips or how to take advantage of campus amenities.

Update directory information

One of the most popular functions on the Duke.edu homepage and Duke Today is the use of the search bar, which provides results that include websites, stories and more. It’s also an easy way to find faculty and staff.

To change your personal and departmental listings, start at the Office of Information Technology website. From there, you can change how your name is listed, enter a preferred email address and even restrict outside people from seeing some information. You can also change your address and phone number on the Duke@Work site.

Replace your DukeCard

A necessity for every-day life on campus, replacing a DukeCard ID is as simple as visiting the university office at 012 Telcom Building (map and walking directions) or going to the Health System office at 04230 Duke Services Center in the Red Zone of Duke Clinic.

Faculty and staff can get a new DukeCard any time – whether the current card is old and worn or if they want a new picture. There is a $5 to $20 fee to replace cards, however, depending on card type.

Amenities aren’t just for students

You don’t have to be a student to lounge at Central Campus’ pool or enjoy recreation centers. In fact, cooling off at the pool - located at 1917 Yearby Ave. - is free for all Duke community members and their guests. You just need a valid DukeCard ID to enter.

If you’re looking to get fit, faculty and staff can access the Brodie and Wilson recreation centers. Single memberships can be had at a discount through the Duke Fitness Club and family memberships can be access by signing up through DukeCard system.

In addition, employees are able to tee off on the fairways of Duke Golf Club, and they get a discount, too. Faculty and staff fees start as low as $25 to play on one of the state’s renowned courses.

Confirm your service category

While every Duke staff member performs important services, extraordinary instances of severe weather or emergency conditions may mean only some positions require on-site presence to offer patient care, student support and research functions.

Employees can confirm with a supervisor their service category, which includes delayed service, reserve service and essential service.

Free ways to get around

Duke buses are a great way to get around campus, but hopping on the Bull City Connector offers a free and easy way to get into Durham. There are six spots for pickup or drop-off spread across East, Central and West campuses and about a dozen stops throughout downtown. A full listing and map can be found on the Connector’s website.

Protect your personal, digital information

With phishing attacks on Duke employee email and accounts in recent months, now is the best time to utilize free resources to help protect data on your computer. In addition to free virus protection, Duke community members can also utilize password protection software and find a variety of security tips and tricks on the Office of Information Technology website.
