Traffic Advisory: Parade to Close Chapel Drive Roundabout

Student celebration will detour traffic from 5 to 5:30 p.m. March 27

Due to inclement weather today, the Caribana Parade has been canceled.

Events scheduled for indoors will proceed as planned.

Duke community members who park near West Campus’ Chapel Drive roundabout may need to adjust travel schedules at the end of the day March 27 to allow for a parade.

From 5 to about 5:30 p.m., Duke Police will close off Chapel Drive from the bus stop in front of the Allen Building to Chapel Drive’s roundabout to allow for a Caribana parade, sponsored by student organizations and the Center for Multicultural Affairs. The parade will begin at 5 p.m. at the bus stop area, travel south down Chapel Drive, around the roundabout and back to the bus stop. Several floats, along with Duke community members, are expected to be part of the celebration, which honors Caribbean culture.

Staff and faculty parked at the Wannamaker Drive Lot will need to leave campus before or after the parade. Community members parked in the Allen Lot leaving campus during the parade can do so by driving north on Flowers Drive toward Erwin Road to avoid the Chapel Drive closure.

After the parade, Duke community members are invited to the West Campus Quad for food, giveaways, live entertainment and more. For information about the Caribana celebration, visit the Duke events calendar.

Impact on Duke Buses

All buses serving the West Campus Chapel stop (C1, C1X, CSW, C2 and C3) will be detoured during the parade. No service will be provided to the stop and all passengers should plan to walk along Chapel Drive toward Duke University Road, boarding at Stop#6286 on Chapel Drive near the Campus Drive circle, just north of the News and Communications Office. building.

Though major traffic delays are not anticipated, passengers can expect to experience a short time frame of potential service delays due to the detour.
