News Tip: World Health Organization Needs ‘Major Reform,’ Duke Expert Says

Dr. Mike Merson, former WHO official now director of Duke Global Health Institute, comments 

A former top WHO official says its mishandling of the Ebola outbreak was not a surprise.

Quote: "WHO’s mishandling of the Ebola outbreak in West Africa should not have surprised us. The organization has been in need of major reform for more than two decades," says Dr. Michael Merson, director of the Duke Global Health Institute. 

"Without such reform it will not be possible for the organization to provide the leadership we need in global health and other organizations will continue to take up its responsibilities."

Bio:Dr. Michael Merson is director, Duke Global Health Institute and vice president and vice provost for Duke University’s global strategy and programs.

Merson worked in various leadership positions at the World Health Organization (WHO) from 1978-1995, serving as director of the WHO Global Program on AIDS.
