How to Protect Personal Data from Hackers

In "spot-the-phish contest," you could win a Google Chromecast or men's basketball tickets

Late last year, the direct deposit pay for four Duke employees was rerouted to an unauthorized account after they clicked on an email link and entered personal data. This summer, another nine Duke employees entered NetIDs, passwords and bank account information into a fake website.

Duke has implemented security features to protect personal data, including payroll transactions, on the Duke@Work self-service website. But everyone at Duke must take action to protect their data as phishing scams grow more frequent, Duke leaders say.

As part of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October, Duke University's IT Security Office and Duke Medicine's Information Security Office are sponsoring a spot-the-phish contest, on-campus giveaways and information sessions on a range of IT security topics. Duke faculty, staff and students can enter a “spot-the-phish” contest to be entered into weekly drawings for a Google Chromecast or four Duke men’s basketball tickets.

IT security staff will be on campus this month with free t-shirts and other giveaways from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the Bryan Center.Learn IT@Lunch on Wednesdays

The Learn IT@Lunch sessions will be held on three Wednesdays in October from noon to 1 p.m. in room 217 of Perkins Library. No pre-registration is required, but seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. (NOTE: Lunch is not provided. Feel free to bring a brown-bag lunch.) Topics include:

The special lunch series on web application security will be held on three Tuesdays in October from noon to 1 p.m. in room 217 of Perkins Library; lunch will be provided for those who pre-register in advance online. Topics will include:

  • Web application hacking explained (Oct. 14).
  • Securing your website (Oct. 21).
  • Contracting with a third party (Oct. 28).
