Groups celebrate Coming Out Day at Duke

Hundreds of students flocked to The Plaza on Tuesday as Duke celebrated its annual "Coming Out Day" celebration, an awareness day for coming out and discussion about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues.

As part of marking the occasion, the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity distributed 1,500 "Love=Love" T-shirts, often regarded as one of the most popular free giveaways on campus. This year’s shirts were new and included references to all members of the LGBT community, including images for transgender and people with disabilities.

"We wanted to highlight how we want our center to be more in-line with the people who visit us and the diverse identities of people across campus," said India Pierce, a program coordinator with the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity. "Coming Out Day is a time for all of us to come together to show support for our inclusive community."

Other groups taking part in Coming Out Day included Jewish Life at Duke, the Center for Multicultural Affairs, International House and more.
