Staff, Families Learn 'Admissions 101'

Special seminar held to talk about college admissions process

About 100 Duke staff and their family members gathered this week to take part in Duke's first "College Admissions 101" course, hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The program was held as an opportunity to provide details about the college admissions process to Duke staff with high school senior-aged children. The goal: help families come up with a list of colleges to apply to and find options to make college affordable.

The seminar wasn't focused on admission to Duke, but rather covered information that will make the admissions process less daunting. Christoph Guttentag, dean of undergraduate admissions, and Nikki Baskin, senior assistant director of admissions covered topics like the building a college list, creating a senior year timeline, and standardized testing.

"We were delighted to offer this to members of the Duke community and gratified by the response," Guttentag said. "We're glad to be able to help educate our colleagues at Duke as their children go through the college admissions process."

College Admissions 101 speakers also included Hayley Broadhead from Financial Aid and Bill Phillips from Human Resources. They discussed paying for college, including need-based financial aid and the Duke Children's Tuition Grant. Participants also had the chance to chat one-on-one with Duke representatives to learn more about the college application and admissions process.
