Registration for summer camps at Duke is now open to Duke staff and faculty, who receive a $50 to $100 discount at many of the camps.

The camps range from athletic and arts camps to pre-college prep courses and career exploration programs. Some are daytime camps; others offer a residential experience.

"In addition to being a key component of summer childcare, these camps offer opportunities for children of Duke families to explore their creative, athletic and academic skills," said Denise Evans, executive director of Duke's Staff and Labor Relations and Staff and Family Programs.

Evans hopes that providing the variety of options on a summer camps web page will make the task of choosing easier for the community.

Children of Duke employees receive a discount of $75 for most athletic camps and $50 or $100 for most arts and academic camps, depending on the hours of the camp. Employees enrolled in the Dependent Care Reimbursement Account can use tax-free money in the account to pay for summer day camps but not for residential (sleepover) camps for children age 12 and under.

Denise Wilborn, staff assistant in the Department of Romance Studies, discovered Duke camps and the discount when her son attended baseball camp on campus when he was 10.

"He dreams of playing for the major leagues, and it was really nice for him to rub shoulders with Duke baseball players," she said.

Duke Human Resources will add more Duke-sponsored camps to the website in the next month as information becomes available. In addition to the Duke-sponsored camps, the Human Resources website also includes links to other summer camp resources in the Triangle area.
