Shelia Johnson doesn't need to wait for the Oscars on Feb. 24 to decide what movie to see next.

Her grandchildren help her choose.

"I love making memories with my grandchildren by giving them the experience I had growing up of seeing films in a theater with lots of other people," said Johnson,  a staff assistant for the Regional Anesthesiology group at Duke Medicine. "They see the previews and say 'let's see that movie next, grandma.' "

Johnson uses PERQS, Duke's employee discount program, to take her 6- and 8-year old grandchildren to the movies about once a month. Through PERQS, she can save $1 for each grandchild and up to $3.50 on her ticket.

Those savings help her pay for the rest of the treat - the popcorn she balances on her lap so Brayden and Karleigh have equal access. "That popcorn is part of the experience," Johnson said. "I can't go to the movies without popcorn."

The employee discount program currently offers savings on tickets at these cinema groups in the Triangle area:

  • Park West Village 14 in Morrisville, run by Stone Theatres, offers $6 tickets - a $3.50 savings for adults - valid only after the first 14 days of a new release.
  • Regal Entertainment Group, which has theaters in Apex, Chapel Hill, Garner and Raleigh, offers $7 and $8 tickets.

Staff and faculty are encouraged to sign up for the PERQS discount email list for updates about discounts at theaters.
