Durham, NC - Abdullah Antepli, Duke's Muslim chaplain, will offer the opening prayer at the June 5 session of the N.C. Senate.

Antepli said his prayer will focus mostly on healing, redemption, compassion and unity.

"I am deeply humbled and honored to receive the invitation to be the guest Chaplain in the N.C. Senate," he said. "I hope many more similar symbolic but very meaningful events will take place to foster our society's commitment to diversity, pluralism and inclusivity."

Antepli was invited by N.C. Sen. Ellie Kinnaird, D-Chapel Hill, and Peter Milner, the Senate Chaplain. He will offer the prayer at 2 p.m.

In 2010, Antepli delivered the opening prayer for a session of the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington D.C. Antepli, who joined Duke in July 2008, is one of only a handful of full-time Muslim chaplains at U.S. colleges and universities.

He is the founder and executive board member of the Muslim Chaplains Association and a member of the National Association of College and University Chaplains. He also serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Duke Divinity School and Duke Islamic Studies Center, where he teaches courses on Islam.
