Editor's Note: This is part of a series of stories running as radio broadcasts during men's basketball games this season.

Durham, NC - "Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art," opens this Thursday, February 16. Calder is one of America's best-loved artists. His suspended mobiles, which balance and sway in the air, are favorites of all ages.

The show, which includes 39 of Calder's own works, will also include pieces by seven contemporary artists who have been influenced by Calder. Several of these artists will be presenting special programs during the show's run, through mid-June.

Sarah Schroth, coordinating curator of the exhibit, discusses the special qualities of Calder's work and why it continues to hold such universal appeal.
