Parking/Traffic Advisory For Semans Funeral Monday; Live Webcast of Service

Bryan Center Garage, Washington Duke Inn designated for funeral parking

Visitors and Duke community members should expect heavy traffic and certain limited parking Monday, Jan. 30, during funeral services for Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans, a descendant of the family that founded Duke University.

A live webcast of the service, which begins at 2 p.m., will be available on the Duke University Ustream channel, http://ustream.tv/dukeuniversity.

Parking

Primary parking for the funeral, which begins at 2 p.m. in Duke Chapel, will be in the Bryan Center Parking Garage (Parking Garage IV) located off Science Drive. Overflow parking will be directed to the Washington Duke Hotel on Cameron Boulevard at the intersection of Science Drive.  Mini-bus service to the Chapel will be provided from the Washington Duke Inn from 12:30 to 5 p.m.

Individuals with disabilities may be dropped off at the Chapel and their
drivers can park at the Bryan Center. Drivers with accessibility needs
may park along Chapel Drive and in the Bryan Center surface lot.

Duke parking permit holders for the Bryan Center Garage (Parking Garage IV) will be directed to park at the Nasher Museum of Art on Campus Drive, the Sarah P. Duke Gardens off Anderson Street, and the Smith Warehouse adjacent to Maxwell Street throughout the day to accommodate parking demands for the funeral.  Parking staff will be stationed at these lots to assist customers. Duke Transit routes serving these areas include C-1 route, traveling from East to West Campuses beginning at 7 a.m., and C1-5, covering the C-1 route with a detour along Maxwell Street, beginning at 7:07 a.m.

"Under normal circumstances, we would never inconvenience our permit holders by asking them to park in a different location," said Kyle Cavanaugh, vice president for administration. "But given the large crowd we are expecting to come and pay their respects for one of our founding family's most beloved members, we ask for patience and understanding to help us address the temporarily parking demands on Monday."

Chapel Quad Vehicle Access

Vehicle access to the Chapel Quad will also be restricted to family and dignitaries only during the day. Pedestrian traffic in the Chapel Quad area will not be affected.

Due to traffic and parking needs along Chapel Drive, Duke transit buses will not travel to the Chapel Quad from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday. Pick up and drop off during this time will take place at the traffic circle connecting Flowers Drive, Wannamaker Drive, Campus Drive and Chapel Drive.
