Beginning Aug. 22, Duke Parking and Transportation Services will introduce several adjustments to transit routes and services for Duke University and Duke University Health System.

Among the changes planned for August and September, Duke transit will extend the LaSalle Loop bus that runs to Morreene Road and Campus Walk by two hours and use a van during weekend service of the Robertson Scholars Express Bus route.

Sam Veraldi, director of Parking and Transportation, said routes are being modified after discussions consultation among university and health system administrators in an effort to offer enhanced options for Duke transit customers within sustainability, safety and budget goals.

"It's important to us to ease congestion across Duke - especially around Duke Hospital, where hundreds of patients, friends and family members travel every day," Veraldi said. "These adjustments will make our services more efficient and bolster transit operations to make sure we're providing a high level of customer service, while providing a way for the Duke community to help lower Duke's carbon footprint."

Transit service changes that begin Aug. 22 include:

  • Extending the H-5 route to include Hock Plaza, Lenox Baker Children's Hospital, the Duke Center for Living and Dialysis Center. The extended route will run every 15 minutes from 7:15 a.m. to 6:12 p.m. Monday to Friday.
  • The LaSalle Loop, which runs from Duke Clinics to Sprunt Avenue and caters to students and employees in apartment complexes along that route will be extended for an extra two hours and run from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday to Friday. Passengers of this route are reminded that Duke Vans will not service the area while the LaSalle Loop bus is running, which is standard transit operating protocol.
  • The C-5 route that runs from West Campus to Brightleaf Square will be discontinued. Students and employees can still access downtown Durham with the GoPass, a free bus pass for Duke students, and eligible employees, and the fare-free Bull City Connector.
  • The Robertson Scholars Express Bus will maintain its normal schedule but use a van on Saturday and Sunday.
