Durham, NC - Political science professor Peter Feaver will discuss American foreign policy in the Obama age during a live webcast of Duke's online office hours at noon EDT on Friday, Oct. 16.

Feaver is co-director of Duke's Program in American Grand Strategy, which examines how the U.S. directs its resources toward achieving its foreign policy goals. He is also co-director of the Triangle Institute of Security Studies.

Viewers can submit questions in advance or during the session by email to live@duke.edu, on the Duke University Live Ustream page, on Facebook or via Twitter with the tag #dukelive.

"When it comes to American foreign policy, we seem to be forever enduring the curse of ‘living in interesting times,'" says Feaver, who will also discuss Obama's review of strategy in Afghanistan and public opinion of the U.S. involvement in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Public opinion has always been a concern in all of America's wars, no matter how long or how short, or how noble or how ignoble they were perceived, it is always in play," Feaver recently told The New York Times.

Feaver is an expert in national security policy, especially civil-military relations and the use of force. He served in the White House as special advisor for strategic planning and institutional reform on the National Security Council during the George W. Bush administration (2005-2007). He also served on the NSC staff during the Clinton Administration as a director for defense policy and arms control (1993-94). He is author of "Armed Servants: Agency, Oversight, and Civil-Military Relations" and co-author of "Choosing Your Battles: American Civil-Military Relations and the Use of Force" and "Paying the Human Costs of War: American Public Opinion & Casualties in Military Conflicts."

Office Hours is a new program in which Duke faculty members share their expertise in a live, interactive format.
