Parking Permit Renewal Begins June 20
Most increases less than $1 per month
Duke faculty and staff can renew their parking permits for the coming academic year beginning June 20.
Most employees will see an increase of less than $1 per month, and those who park in remote lots will see rates increase by only 15 - 20 cents per month. Parking fees contribute not only to the maintenance and operations of parking areas, but also to the bus and van transportation services provided by Duke.
Beginning June 20, employees may renew parking permits online at www.parking.duke.edu, or by mail. They may also renew permits in person at the Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) office in the lower level of the facilities building near the Medical Center Bookstore (just off the walkway between Duke Clinic and Duke Hospital).
Paper renewal forms will be available at the PTS office and on the website starting June 20. Employees are encouraged to renew their permits prior to July 27 to ensure they receive a permit before the new permits are required on Aug. 16.
"Last year, nearly 80 percent of renewals were handled online, drastically increasing the efficiency of the process," said Cathy Reeve, director of PTS. "We hope that even more will take advantage of this service this year."
Reeve said that faculty and staff who signed up for "Easy Renew" last year should also visit the renewal website to provide PTS information regarding a preferred mailing address for their permit, update vehicle information, and prioritize their waitlist requests for alternate parking areas."
Changes in the Renewal Process
PTS has made several changes to the renewal process to improve service:
Mailing. In the past, all permits were mailed to work addresses. This year employees can choose to have the permit mailed to their work address, home address or any other address in the United States.
Two-Year Permit. Employees using payroll deduction are eligible for a two-year permit for all lots except H, Green Zone and residential lots. The two-year permit means you do not have to go through the renewal process next year. You will automatically be charged the new rate at the beginning of the second year of the permit. This change will not prohibit employees from moving to other lots through the wait list process.
Wait List Process. Because PTS has made every effort to move people off wait lists into their preferred parking lots, they do not expect there to be many open parking spots. If you wish to be put on a wait list for a parking lot other than the one for which you have a permit, the renewal process is the time to make that request. Because university and medical center parking are now combined, you may have more waitlist options.
Alternative Transportation. To encourage the use of environmentally friendly alternative transportation, PTS is making the following options available to all employees.
A. Two people who ride together may share the full annual cost of a permit.
B. Three or more people who carpool will receive further permit discounts.
C. Employees who use the TTA Vanpool can park the van for free.
Each person who rideshares, carpools or participates in a vanpool will also receive 12 free parking coupons for days that they must drive alone.
