Message From The Provost
October 25, 2002 | DURHAM, NC -- "One of the most important decisions we make each year is the selection of our new faculty hires. Whether it is a senior researcher with an already established record of excellence, or a junior faculty member just starting out, these people are an important source of new ideas and energy for scholarship and teaching at Duke. They also are fundamentally important for the university's ability to take programs into new directions or bring support for existing programs of strength.
"Because of their importance, we have put significant resources into supporting new faculty members, particularly the junior ones just starting on the tenure track. We want them to be able to use the resources of Duke University to stimulate their creativity and reach their potential, whether in research or in the classroom. You will find that many of these new faculty members are already having an impact, reaching out in innovative ways even to colleagues outside their department. We set out the highest expectations and standards for these faculty members, but each and every one of them is here because we believe that they will fulfill those expectations in great ways."
