William Shows passed away on December 2 at the age of 89. Born in Mississippi, he studied Greek, Latin, German, classic philology, and theology before earning his Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Duke in 1967. He came to Duke in 1960, initially as an instructor in Greek and then as a lecturer in the Department of Religion in 1968, a role he maintained until his retirement.
He joined the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences faculty as an associate professor of medical psychology, earning tenure over his 21 years in our department. In 1998, he retired as an associate professor emeritus.
Dr. Shows was among the first psychologists admitted to the Duke-UNC Psychoanalytic Institute to study psychoanalysis. Additional training included a fellowship at the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland. As the director of Duke’s clinical psychology internship program for 23 years, he guided the program into achieving a national standing as a top ranked internship.
