Duke students Sanjna Kalisetty, Kareen Kuar and Sarah Reidman lay a wreath on Thursday at the 9/11 memorial in Keohane Quad for the six Duke Alumni lost on September 11th, 2001.
The memorial is near the grove of six trees planted behind Keohane Quad to commemorate the six Duke alumni killed during the 9/11 attacks in 2001.
The day, now known as Patriots Day, or the National Day of Service and Remembrance, marked the 24th anniversary of the attacks that killed more than 2,900 Americans. Five of the alumni worked in the World Trade Center; one was on United Airlines Flight 175. All flags on the campus were lowered in memory of the victims of the attacks, their family members, and the sacrifices of the first responders.
“The Patriots Day wreath laying tradition is one of the significant ways we commemorate the six Duke alumni who died during the 9/11 attacks,” said Laura Heilenday, chief engagement officer at Duke University. “It continues to be an important and meaningful tradition that we come together as a campus community in memory of them, their families, and the other Americans who perished that day.”
