Before “The Shot,” Grant Hill had an earlier opportunity to win a game with a full-court heave to Christian Laettner. That one didn’t work. In his Commencement address, Hill explains what went wrong and what lessons for students he learned from the failure.
A Duke alumnus and trustee, Hill is a 2018 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee and one of the most celebrated student-athletes in Duke history—his iconic No. 33 jersey retired by the Blue Devils. In a speech that blended wisdom, reflection, and motivation, Hill urged graduates to “guard your integrity—only you can give it away.”
He encouraged them not to fear failure.Hill challenged Duke graduates not to be passengers in life, but to stay rooted in core values: “Let your integrity carry you through the tests that come.”
