Toddi Steelman, Duke’s vice president and vice provost for climate and sustainability, and a wildfire expert
As the people of Los Angeles suffer devastating loss from wildfires, Toddi Steelman, Duke’s vice president and vice provost for climate and sustainability, and a wildfire expert, discusses three points to consider in order for us to learn how to coexist with fire. They are:
1.We no longer have a fire season; we have a fire year.
2.Communities need to remain prepared.
3.Managing vegetation is very important.
“The challenge for communities is to remain vigilant and prepared year-round now,” said Steelman. “The opportunity for communities is to be prepared at the household level, the neighborhood level and the larger community level to make the places where they live more fire resilient.”
