On Dec. 11, 1924, James B. Duke signed the Indenture of Trust, creating the Duke Endowment and naming educational institutions, hospitals, children and families and the rural Methodist Church as its primary beneficiaries.
Trinity College received a $6 million gift and was subsequently named Duke University in honor of Washington Duke, James B. Duke’s father. Today, Duke celebrates the 100th anniversary of the indenture with events on East and West Campus and the Medical Center.
Students, faculty and staff are invited to drop by three campus locations from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. for complimentary cookies and hot apple cider in celebration of this momentous occasion.
