Said@Duke: U.S. Rep. Valerie Foushee on Responsible Oversight of AI

U.S. Rep. Valerie Foushee (NC-04) recently co-hosted an AI roundtable with the Pratt School of Engineering and the Duke in DC office. The discussion featured remarks from the congresswoman as well as Elizabeth Kelly, a Duke alumna and director of the US AI Safety Institute, and Lee Tiedrich, a distinguished faculty fellow in ethical technology at Duke, in conversation with industry professionals.

The roundtable focused principally on AI open hardware, open software and infrastructure, including how best to ensure that sufficient computing capacity is deployed responsibly to promote AI competition and access throughout society, and made accessible to groups that historically have faced challenges obtaining capital and other vital resources. It also focused on how to address the growing adverse environmental impacts of AI systems.
