Samuel Dubois Cook Society Humanity: Equity: Community

The Samuel DuBois Cook Awards Selection Committee invites nominations of Duke staff, administrators, students (undergraduate, graduate or professional) and members from the larger community.

One faculty member will be selected for the Raymond Gavins Distinguished Faculty Award in addition to Cook Society Awards for one staff member, one undergraduate student and one professional/graduate student. The committee seeks members of the Duke community who display a commitment to the founding principles of the Cook Society:

Submit a nomination using the Cook Awards online form

  • Actively nurture a sense of community and belonging for Black people.
  • Commit to translate the promise and potential of Black people at Duke into fulfillment and actuality.
  • Foster positive and constructive interpersonal and intergroup relations within both Duke University's and Durham's Black communities.
  • Cultivate positive relations between Black people and other ethnic, racial, and national groups on the basis of an enlightened appreciation and knowledge of our historic interdependence.

Nominations are due by Wednesday, Dec. 20. Winners will be notified the week of January 8, 2024. Awards will be presented during the annual Cook Society Awards Ceremony at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 15, at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club.
