The Durham Fire Department and Duke Facilities Management will hold joint training exercises from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on December 14, 15 and 19 near the West Campus Steam Plant off Research Drive.
The routine exercises will simulate confined-space rescues such as those that would involve workers who need to be extracted from underground utility spaces. All three units of the Durham Fire Department’s Battalion 1, which serves Duke’s campus, will take part in the drill sessions alongside team members from Duke Facilities Management.
Expect to see several Durham Fire Department trucks and roughly a dozen Durham firefighters near the West Campus Steam Plant, and areas between the Duke Cancer Center and Duke Medicine Pavilion, each day during the training sessions.
“This training is an important safety exercise for our respective organizations,” said Duke Facilities Management Safety Manager Erica King. “It provides training for what to do if someone were to need help getting out of an underground utility vault on campus.”
