Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected in an open, merit-based competition that considers leadership potential, academic and/or professional achievement, and record of service.

“Upon completing an extensive application and review process, our Fulbright awardees are now doing incredible work as scholars, students, and teachers around the world,” said Anna Bernard-Hoverstad, program coordinator in the Office of University Scholars and Fellows. “We hope that their time abroad will continue to inspire personal and professional growth for years to come, and we are delighted and proud that our Finalists are representing the Duke community across the globe.”

In a letter congratulating Duke President Vincent Price on the university’s role, U.S. Secretary of State Andrew Blinken emphasized the program’s value in building a stronger international community.

“As a diplomat, I love the Fulbright Program because it supports changemakers and fosters global cooperation,” Blinken said.  “Fulbrighters strive to make the world a better place in classrooms and countries worldwide.”

Since its inception in 1946, more than 400,000 participants from all backgrounds and fields – including recent university graduates, teachers, scientists, researchers, artists, and others, from the United States and over 160 other countries – have participated in the Fulbright Program.  Fulbright alumni have returned to their home countries to make an impact on their communities thanks to their expanded worldview, a deep appreciation for their host country and its people, and a larger network of colleagues and friends.

The Fulbright Scholarship application process is open to Duke seniors, graduated alumni and graduate and professional students. The program is designed to facilitate cultural exchange and increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those of other countries. The Office of University Scholars and Fellows offers assistance to those wishing to apply to the Fulbright program.
