Editor's Note
When writing the academic principles driving "Building on Excellence," the
authors of Duke's strategic plan started with the hiring of new faculty.
"Investment in constant improvement of the faculty is the route to
excellence in all that the University does," the plan states in its first
principle.
That's an indication of how important the university treats the decisions
to hire new faculty. Whether the candidate is a junior scholar fresh with
a Ph.D. or a senior academic already with an established record, Duke
places great expectations on these new hires as scholars, teachers and
members of the Duke community.
Throughout the year, Dialogue will profile in the printed version and on
the Web a series of new faculty hires, both junior and senior faculty
members. In this special Web section we start with eight new hires from
across the university.
