Refusing Military Service in Israel Thursday, March 3, 2005 -- Eyal Brami said he never paid much attention to politics growing up in Israel. That changed when the date for his mandatory military service came closer. "As my recruitment date drew closer, I started to explore the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and realized that everything I ever thought I new about the conflict was either only half-true, or in some cases a manipulative lie," Brami said Monday, speaking at Duke. "I began to understand that if I joined the Israeli army, I would be giving my support to, and helping to commit, terrible things that have nothing to do with the security of the Israeli citizens." Brami and fellow Israeli conscientious objector Rotem Mor, spoke at a workshop on the "Conscientious Objector Movement in Israel." The talk was sponsored by Hiwar. Mor has served a prison term for his actions. Brami will go before a Conscience Board upon his return to Israel this month.
