DURHAM, N.C. - For the second consecutive week, Duke freshman Beatrice Capra was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Women's Tennis Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday. Capra shared this week's honor with Virginia Tech senior Martha Blakely.
Capra, ranked seventh in the nation, scored a 6-4, 6-1 win over Mississippi's 12th-ranked Kristi Boxx to clinch a 4-3 Duke win over the Rebels in the first round of the ITA Indoors. The Ellicott Ciy, Md., native also teamed with Rachel Kahan to sweep all four No. 2 doubles matches in the tournament, as the third-ranked Blue Devils defeated No. 23 Mississippi, No. 10 Michigan and No. 7 California before falling to No. 4 UCLA in the finals.
Capra and Kahan defeated Ole Miss' Gabby Rangel and Erin Stephens, 8-1, in Duke's first round victory, followed by an 8-3 win over Michigan's Mimi Nguyen and Sarah Lee tandem Saturday, clinching the doubles point for the Blue Devils. The duo picked up another 8-3 win over Annie Goransson and Anett Schutting in Sunday's 4-1 semifinal victory over California, before cruising to an 8-2 upset victory over UCLA's 12th-ranked duo of Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton in Monday's championship match. Capra and Kahan are a perfect 9-0 as a unit in 2012.
After a 12-day hiatus between matches, the Blue Devils will return to Durham and host Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m.
