Heavy traffic expected for 4 p.m. service in Duke Chapel

A memorial service will be held for former Duke University President Keith H. Brodie on Monday, Dec. 5 from 4-5 p.m. in Duke Chapel.

The service, which is open to all members of the Duke community and the public, is expected to generate significant traffic on campus in the afternoon. Parking for the service will be available in the Duke University Road Parking Lot and the new Science Dr. Parking Garage near the intersection with Cameron Blvd. Parking attendants will be available to assist, and shuttles will transport people from those locations to Duke Chapel beginning at 2:30 p.m. Monday. The Chapel doors will open at 3 p.m. for the memorial service

Accessible parking and drop off will be available from the Bryan Center Parking Lot located behind Duke Chapel and near the accessible entrance to the Chapel. Parking in front of Duke Chapel will be reserved for immediate family members.

The memorial service will also be webcast live for those unable to attend. Following the service, attendees will be invited to a reception held at the Washington Duke Inn.

Brodie, a professor emeritus of psychiatry, served as Duke’s seventh president, succeeding Terry Sanford. During his tenure, applications to Duke's undergraduate and graduate schools increased greatly. The university also launched programs to recruit and retain minority faculty and added new academic initiatives, including a School of the Environment.
