Experience the Work of Campus Safety Firsthand with Duke’s Citizens Police Academy

Staff and faculty can register by Sept. 11 for an up-close view of how the Duke University Police Department operates

Want to know what happens behind the scenes at the Duke University Police Department?

The Duke Citizens Police Academy offers staff and faculty a chance to learn how officers serve the campus community through a series of interactive classes beginning Oct. 7.

Seats are limited and anyone interested in participating this fall should submit an application by Sept. 11. All applicants must complete a background check to participate.

Over seven weeks, participants will explore topics ranging from criminal investigations and traffic enforcement to emergency response and active threat preparedness. The program is designed to provide a better understanding of the training, responsibilities and decision-making that shape modern policing on campus.

Classes are held on five Wednesday evenings and one Saturday afternoon, followed by a daytime graduation ceremony.

An Alumni Citizens Police Academy also is available for those who have completed the Citizens Police Academy. Alumni classes begin Oct. 13 and cover topics such as cyber security and Durham CSI over six weeks. Duke University Police provides information on registration to eligible staff and faculty.
