Why The Sun Feels So Much Stronger
Scientists measure UV light — and the rest of sunlight’s spectrum — by using prisms to separate light into its component wavelengths, like a rainbow.
The summer sun is more intense because its rays pass through less of Earth’s atmosphere, says physicist Martin Fischer. Less atmosphere means less ultraviolet light is absorbed or scattered, allowing more UV to reach the ground and increasing the risk of skin damage.
Why Mosquitoes Take Over
Warm weather helps mosquito populations grow rapidly, according to entomologist Ke Dong. Scientists track mosquitoes by inspecting standing water for larvae and using specialized traps to catch adults and test them for disease.
“Summer provides mosquitoes with ideal conditions,” Dong said. Higher temperatures speed their growth, shorten their life cycle and allow females to lay eggs more often.
Why Goals Often Fall Apart
Summer’s relaxed schedule can make it harder to stay motivated, says psychologist James Shah. Without regular routines, people lose the structure that helps keep goals on track.
“The solution, ultimately, is not to summon more motivation but to design better conditions for action,” Shah said. He recommends building small daily habits, setting deadlines and creating accountability.
