Where is cyclospora found?

Cyclospora is most often linked to fresh produce such as leafy greens, herbs and berries. Washing produce may reduce risk, but cooking it to at least 158 degrees Fahrenheit reliably kills the parasite.

What are the symptoms of the cyclospora infection?

The most common symptom is frequent, watery diarrhea that can be severe. Other symptoms include stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite and weight loss. Symptoms usually appear two days to two weeks after exposure and can last for weeks or even months.

Should I see a primary care provider for cyclospora?

See a healthcare provider if diarrhea or vomiting lasts more than a few days, or sooner if you have a weakened immune system or other digestive conditions. If left untreated, chronic diarrhea can leave you severely dehydrated, which can lead to serious health complications.

Treatment typically includes antibiotics, and staying hydrated is essential during recovery.

“If you’re unsure of what to do, reach out to your provider. They can guide you in the right direction,” said Brennan.
