What a psychologist, a mathematician and a computer scientist say about the 250-year-old document

As the nation marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, faculty members at Trinity College of Arts & Sciences are examining how its ideals continue to shape the questions scholars ask today.
Researchers were asked: “How does your field help us understand, advance, or challenge the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence?"
Their responses reveal how questions about belonging, responsibility and democracy remain relevant in the 21st century:
For psychologist Sarah Gaither, one of the Declaration's most important questions is who belongs in the nation’s collective “we.” Her research suggests that although people naturally sort themselves into groups, those boundaries are often more flexible than they appear.
She argues that creating spaces where individuals can embrace the full complexity of their identities helps expand a sense of belonging and move society closer to the Declaration's promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Read Gaither’s essay.
For mathematician Jonathan Mattingly, mathematics helps us plan for the future and understand how the past might have unfolded differently. His work uses mathematics to examine electoral systems, helping identify when voting maps distort representation and to explore ways to create fairer elections. Computer scientist Jian Pei focuses on a challenge the Declaration's authors could not have anticipated: the rise of artificial intelligence. Pei argues that innovation must be guided by ethical responsibility. The critical question is not just what technology can do but also what it should do. “Ask why relentlessly.
