Here’s a roundup of recent announcements across campus:

Center for Teaching and Learning: The Duke Center for Teaching and Learning has announced that Bridgette Martin Hard is the center’s inaugural faculty director.

Hard plans to shape CTL’s academic vision and guide its faculty development efforts. Her priorities include supporting instructors across all career stages, strengthening partnerships with schools and departments, fostering cross-disciplinary conversations about teaching, and helping faculty navigate emerging opportunities and challenges in higher education. Guggenheim Fellowship: Tarek Elgindi, professor of mathematics, has been awarded a 2026 Guggenheim Fellowship, joining the 101st class of Guggenheim Fellows. Elgindi’s research centers on the Euler equation, a fundamental mathematical model describing the motion of fluids such as air and water.

His work explores the complex behavior that emerges from these equations, particularly the dynamics of vortices, the swirling motions familiar from everyday phenomena like water circling a drain. For more information, go to Trinity College of Arts & Sciences.

Duke University Marine Lab: The Nicholas School of the Environment has selected Joel Fodrie as the new director of the Duke University Marine Lab in Beaufort, North Carolina. Fodrie, who grew up in Beafort, comes from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was director of the Institute of Marine Sciences. Fodrie’s research focuses on coastal and estuarine ecosystems, fisheries ecology, and the resilience of marine communities.
