Trustees Conclude Discussion of DST 2.0, Look Ahead

Board also approves the FY 2027 capital and operating budgets

At its quarterly meeting, the Duke University Board of Trustees held the fourth and final session of a yearlong program of engagement focused on the next phase of Duke Science and Technology (referred to as DST 2.0). The goal of the program was to engage participants in a comprehensive process to identify, shape and evaluate transformational ideas that will define DST 2.0.

The program included participation by faculty, students and administrators, allowing participants to gain collective insight, contribute their expertise, and provide advice to senior leadership in planning for the future.

Highlights of the May session included synthesis of the key lessons from prior case studies – spanning quantum science, AI and education, and health care innovation – demonstrating Duke’s ability to advance high-potential ideas while identifying the additional resources needed to fully realize their impact. Next, two examples of “game changers” in the pipeline were introduced, illustrating how the DST model will enable continued, disciplined investment in emerging opportunities.

This was followed by a panel discussion on Duke’s innovation ecosystem, inviting participants to assess current strengths and gaps and provide guidance on how to better support, scale and translate breakthrough ideas. There was a discussion of Duke’s vision for AI and computing, including how Duke can lead in the future of societally grounded computing education and research. The session concluded with a discussion on positioning DST within the MADE FOR THIS campaign.  

In other business, the board:

  • Welcomed David Zaas, chief executive officer of Duke University Health System; 
  • Received a financial update and approved FY 2027 capital and operating budgets;
  •  Received updates on the MADE FOR THIS Campaign, global strategy and engagement and 
     undergraduate admissions; 
  • Approved recommendations from the board’s standing committees; and
  • Honored trustees whose service on the board will conclude in June.
