Enhanced Building Security Planned During Summer

DukeCard required to access most campus buildings beginning May 20

As part of efforts to provide a safe environment for the campus community, Duke University will be moving to a “controlled state” for most doors on campus during the summer. This means doors will require a mobile or physical DukeCard for access, similar to night and weekend access during the academic year. This protocol will begin Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

While most facilities on campus have limited and sporadic occupancy during the summer, there are plans in place to support access by students, as well as pre-college and other summer program participants.

After coordination with multiple units and schools, some facilities will remain open on the current locking schedule, including:

  • Brodhead Center
  • Bryan Center
  • Nasher Museum of Art
  • Karsh Visitor and Alumni Center
  • Duke Gardens Gateway
  • Duke Libraries
  • Fuqua School of Business
  • Duke Divinity School
  • Page Auditorium
  • Undergraduate Admissions
  • 705 Broad St.
  • Duke Athletics
  • Wilson and Brodie Recreation Center (DukeCard required at Desk)

Duke community members should carry their mobile or physical DukeCard for appropriate access to facilities during the summer.
