Campus Road and Utility Projects for Summer 2026
Building renewals and utility upgrades continue across Duke's East and West campuses
Koch Player Performance Center at Jack Coombs Field
What’s happening: Jack Coombs Field, the home to Duke’s baseball program since 1931, will get a significant addition with the David Koch Jr. Player Performance Center. The 8,000 square foot facility built along the third-base side of Coombs Field will feature multiple pitching and hitting areas equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Construction on the project began in February and current work includes site excavation, stormwater improvements, utility connections and new visitor parking.
What to expect: Starting in May, traffic on Whitford Drive will be reduced to one lane with flaggers during the day. Visitor parking spots next to Coombs Field are currently closed and will be relocated to the new parking lot on the other side of Whitford Drive, which will be available in November 2026.
Expected completion: Construction is expected to be complete in November 2026 and the move-in phase will be finished in December 2026.

Krzyzewski Center for Athletic Excellence Modernization
What’s happening: To provide more space for Duke’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, the Krzyzewski Center for Athletic Excellence will have a three-story expansion on the north end of the building and parking to the west. The addition will feature new training and hydrotherapy rooms on level one and shell space to use for future improvements. To make room for the addition, Scharf Hall will be demolished.
What to expect: Work preparing the site for utility and stormwater upgrades began in February and will continue until August, requiring minor parking disruptions and pedestrian detours near the Krzyzewski Center and Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Scharf Hall demolition is slated to begin in August 2026. During this phase, some parking spaces in the Sanford School of Public Policy Lot will be unavailable. Stormwater upgrades will be made in the parking lot during the winter of 2026.
Expected completion: Parking lot impacts are anticipated to end in the fall of 2027. Construction on the addition and spaces on level one are expected to be complete in January 2028.

Cameron Indoor Stadium and Card Gym Utility Renewal
What’s happening: The work of updating the stormwater systems, underground sanitation and power systems serving Cameron Indoor Stadium, Card Gymnasium and nearby buildings is unfolding around Krzyzewskiville. The project is part of a multi-year effort to upgrade the infrastructure on West Campus.
What to expect: With heavy foot traffic around the worksite – especially during summer events such as Durham high school graduations and student move-in – there will be clearly marked pedestrian detours throughout the duration of the project.
Expected completion: The project is expected to be finished by September 2026.

Duke University Road Sidewalks and Crosswalks
What’s happening: The south side of Duke University Road, between the entrance to the visitors’ parking lot and Anderson Street will get a significant facelift. There will be new sidewalk added, upgraded lighting, new trees and Duke stone pillars added between the sidewalk and parking lot. The crosswalk at Anderson Street will also be enhanced with new signals for pedestrians.
What to expect: There will be limited pedestrian access to the south side of Duke University Road as well as temporary lane closures for vehicular traffic at points during the work.
Expected completion: The work will be completed in September 2026.

Reuben-Cooke Building Renewal
What’s happening: Built in 1931, the Reuben-Cooke Building is undergoing a complete renewal. The interior of the building will be reimagined with modern offices, classrooms and lab spaces and a spacious lobby featuring photos and information showcasing the contributions of the building’s namesake, Wilhelmina Reuben-Cooke. The project also includes a new roof, a restoration of the building's historic windows and a total overhaul of its mechanical, electrical, plumbing and telecommunication systems.
What to expect: The building remains closed and pedestrian traffic around the site will continue to be restricted. The work has required some spaces in the Upper Allen Lot to be unavailable.
Expected completion: The project is expected to be finished in May 2027.

Lilly Library Renovation and Brodie Gym Utility Upgrades
What’s happening: The comprehensive renovation of Lilly Library, which began in 2024, will hit the homestretch this summer. The construction of the library’s addition – which will add 24,800 gross square feet to the original 1927 building – continues this summer with work on the study spaces, project rooms and mechanical and electrical systems. Around Lilly Library, new sidewalks and curbs, a new driveway to the library’s service entrance and a greenspace near the rear of the library will be added.
Also this summer, Brodie Recreation Center will be connected to Duke’s underground hot water heating system and grading will begin on the field between Brodie Recreation Center and Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium to prepare for the installation of new tennis courts.
What to expect: As they have been since 2024, detours for vehicular and pedestrian traffic around Lilly Library and Brodie Recreation Center will be constant. Brodie Gym Drive will be one lane at times due to the hot water project.
Expected completion: The Brodie Recreation Center utility work is slated to be complete in August 2026. Lilly Library’s renovation is expected to be complete by September 2026 with the move-in phase potentially continuing until November 2026.
