Price Reappointed to Third Term as President
Price’s reappointment follows a scheduled administrative review conducted by a committee of trustees and faculty and chaired by Trustee Patty Morton. To inform the review process, the committee gathered input from stakeholders including trustees, faculty, administrators, students, alumni, and external partners and constituents. In addition, the full Duke community was invited to share input with the review committee.
“We are fortunate to have in President Price an exceptional leader with a clear vision for advancing excellence in Duke’s second century,” said Morton. “I am grateful to the review committee for their service, and to the nearly 100 students, faculty, staff, alumni, and board members who provided thoughtful input regarding President Price’s leadership.”
Price has served as president since 2017 and was reappointed to a second term that began in 2022. During his second term he has continued to advance a strategic vision focused on empowering Duke faculty, staff and students; transforming teaching and learning; strengthening community; partnering with purpose in Durham and the region; and engaging Duke’s global network of alumni and friends.
He has led Duke in effectively responding to challenges including the return to full unrestricted operations following the COVID-19 pandemic; recent reductions in funding for the university’s mission; financial challenges faced by Duke University Health System following the pandemic; and significant disruptions in the landscape of college athletics.
During his second term, Price has overseen an acceleration of progress toward priorities such as enhancing financial aid and the student experience, and investments in faculty excellence including through the Office for Faculty Advancement, support for research translation and commercialization, and the Duke Science and Technology (DST) initiative.
He has prioritized efforts that have resulted in measurable increases in belonging and community on campus. A university-wide campus culture survey introduced in 2021 and repeated in 2024 yielded data that continues to inform unit-level and university-wide work to create an environment that supports all students, faculty, and staff in achieving their full potential.
Guided by the recommendations of the Board of Trustees’ Centennial Celebration Task Force, Price stewarded Duke’s 2024 yearlong Centennial Celebration that served as a platform for strengthening a shared sense of purpose, promoting better understanding of Duke’s institutional history, and launching the university’s second century of excellence and impact.
Under Price’s leadership the university continues to invest in sustained excellence in the humanities and elevation of the arts on campus. Advancing recommendations made by the Arts Planning Group commissioned during Price’s first term, Duke has taken additional steps to elevate the role of the arts on campus, strengthen support for faculty, and make the arts more inclusive and accessible to all students and the wider Durham community.
Through the Duke Climate Commitment, announced in 2022, Price has integrated efforts to develop and implement solutions to climate change across all aspects of Duke’s mission, including education, research, campus operations, and community partnerships.
During a period of significant change and disruption in intercollegiate athletics, Price has reaffirmed Duke’s commitment to providing a world-class student-athlete experience and ensuring that intercollegiate athletics remains a positive influence on the university’s national and global reputation. During the last five years Duke has secured 80 team and individual ACC Championships, and one individual national championship, while maintaining one of the nation’s leading Graduation Success Rates. In 2025, Duke Football won its first ACC championship since 1962, and the 2024-25 season was the winningest in Duke history for the trio of football, men’s basketball and women's basketball.
Beyond campus, Price has prioritized the implementation of Duke’s Strategic Community Impact Plan, including considerable investments in partnerships to advance health, well-being and economic development in Durham and North Carolina more broadly. These include the creation of Duke’s Center for Community Engagement, the opening of the Durham Early College of Health Sciences (a collaboration of Duke, Durham Tech, and Durham Public Schools), and financial support for affordable housing in Durham.
Price has also championed new approaches to engaging Duke’s global network of alumni and friends. In 2025 the university launched MADE FOR THIS: The Campaign for Duke, a comprehensive campaign designed to generate philanthropic support for the university’s mission and foster alumni engagement. It has already proven to be the most successful fundraising campaign in Duke’s history.
Though Duke University Health System (DUHS) emerged from the pandemic in a weakened financial position, it has now returned to financial strength through the implementation of an operational improvement plan and strategic investments to enhance its market position.
Throughout his presidency, Price has played an active role in shaping the future of higher education. He has advocated for Duke’s priorities and provided leadership at the national level through roles with the Association of American Universities (AAU), the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), the College Sports Commission, the National Humanities Center, the Presidents and Chancellors Council on Public Impact Research, and College Presidents for Civic Preparedness.
