Changes to the Paid Parental Leave policy to provide greater flexibility for employees
Duke is making changes to the Paid Parental Leave policy to provide greater flexibility for employees developing the foundational bonds with newborns or newly adopted children. The following modifications will be effective March 1, 2026, and address unique circumstances that could arise:
In cases where a newborn requires extended hospitalization immediately following delivery, Paid Parental Leave may be deferred until the child is discharged from the hospital.
Part of the eligibility criteria includes regularly working 1,250 hours during the prior 12-month period. An exception may be granted for employees impacted by Involuntary Schedule Flexing (applies only DUHS Staff).
Staff who fall short of the 1250-hour eligibility requirement due to involuntary flexing may request an exception review to become eligible for Paid Parental Leave.
Involuntary flexing hours may be used to calculate the 1250-hour requirement.
More information about these changes and the process for requesting Paid Parental Leave can be found on the Duke Human Resources website. All changes to the HR Policy Manual can also be found on the HR Policy Manual Revision Notes.
