At its quarterly meeting, the Duke University Board of Trustees held the fourth and final session of a year-long program of engagement focused on Duke’s global strategy. Students, faculty and administrators have been participating in the sessions with trustees this year to discuss ways to leverage Duke’s existing global assets to advance Duke’s strategic priorities and address major global challenges such as climate change, global health and sustainable economic development.
The May meeting affirmed the value of and commitment to Duke’s global engagement in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment and offered a preview of future directions, drawing on insights that emerged from this year’s board discussions and recommendations from the Provost’s Global Priorities Committee (GPC). Participants in the session also discussed the importance of alumni engagement in Duke’s global activities, as well as the ways that an international presence enhances Duke in Durham.
In other business, the board:
Received a progress report on the university-wide strategic re-alignment and cost reduction program;
Participated in an educational session on the process for faculty appointments, promotions, and tenure, as well as the professional support offered by Duke’s Office of Faculty Advancement for faculty at all stages of their careers;
Received updates on undergraduate admissions, Duke University Health System, and Duke Kunshan University;
Approved recommendations from the board’s standing committees; and
Honored trustees whose service on the board will conclude in June.
