At the May commencement ceremony, five leaders and pioneers in their fields were honored for their accomplishments. The big name of the five was comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who presented the commencement address. The others are celebrated figures in their own fields: Claudius “C.B.” Claiborne, a distinguished educator who was a pioneering Black student-athlete at Duke; Rhiannon Giddens, winner of the MacArthur Fellowship, the Pulitzer Prize and two Grammy awards for her pathbreaking music; Rose Marcario, CEO of Patagonia Inc, who showed the way to balancing profits with environmental activism, and Desmond Meade, a Florida voting rights activist who restored the franchise for thousands of convicted felons who had served their sentence.
