Duke Flags Lowered: Professor Emeritus Buford Jones Dies

Hawthorne scholar Buford Jones
Duke Associate Professor Emeritus William Buford Jones, 91, of Durham, passed away at Hillcrest Convalescent Center, July 7, 2024, after a long illness.
Jones taught in the Department of English for 50 years. He specialized in 18th and 19th century American Literature, particularly the works of Hawthorne, Melville, Poe, Emerson, and Thoreau.
A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon p.m. Thursday, July 11, at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service in Durham. A funeral service will follow at noon at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service Chapel. Burial will then be held at Maplewood Cemetery.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers friends should consider a gift to the Friends of the Duke Library.
