Forbes Names Duke University and Health System as Best-In-State Employers

Forbes ranks the Health System 14th and the University 24th in its annual list of top workplaces in North Carolina

Duke University and Duke University Health System are among the “Best-In-State Employers” in 2023, according to Forbes.

Duke University Health System placed 14th overall in the state. Duke University was ranked 24th.

“To be regarded as one of the jewels of the state, where people not only want to send their children to be educated or to seek health care, but also to come work, speaks volumes,” said Vice President for Duke Human Resources Antwan Lofton. “It’s a great place to work. I’m very excited that our initiatives in the university and health system are being noticed beyond the doors of Duke.”

Lofton said that in addition to offering a place to work, Duke strives to offer benefits which enrich the lives of its workforce, such as benefits that help families and a robust slate of professional development opportunities. And in recent years, Duke has expanded its parental leave benefit and enhanced its employee tuition assistance program.

America's Best-in-State Employers 2023 were identified based on 2.1 million employer recommendations from employees working for companies with more than 500 employees in the United States. The recommended employers have been grouped into one of the 25 industry sectors.

Employees were asked to anonymously give opinions on work-related topics such as their employer’s working conditions, salary, diversity, potential for development and company image. Employees were also asked to evaluate other workplaces within their state and gauge their willingness to recommend their employer to their own friends and family.

With roughly 43,000 employees, Duke is the second-largest private employer in the North Carolina.

Forbes recently listed Duke University Health System 73rd and Duke University 105th on its 2023 list of “America’s Best Employers for Women.” Duke University Health System was also ranked 41st on Forbes’ 2023 list of “American’s Best Large Employers.”

Newsweek included Duke University in its 2023 list of “America’s Greatest Workplaces.”
