Global List of Highly Cited Puts Duke in Top Ten

Fifty-four Duke researchers among most influential in their fields

The list of Highly Cited Researchers for 2019 includes 54 of Duke’s most prominent and influential researchers, some of whom made the list more than once. (see names below)

That number puts Duke into a 4-way tie for 8th among the world’s universities for its number of highly-cited scientists.

Citation rate – the number of times a given author’s work appears in the citations of other papers – is a proxy for the influence and importance of a scientist’s work. This annual metric has been compiled for decades by a company now called ISI-Web of Science, a Clarivate Analytics company.

The listing is intended to recognize  “researchers with broad community influence,” the organization says.

The data are taken from 21 broad research fields. The fields are defined by sets of journals and, in the case of multidisciplinary journals such as Nature and Science, by a paper-by-paper assignment to a field based on an analysis of the cited references in the papers. ISI-Web of Science also weighted the occurrence of self-citation in their analyses, though this practice varies by discipline.

Twenty-four of the Duke researchers are in the category of "Cross-Field" for being multidisciplinary.

Globally, Duke is in a four-way tie for eighth place with MIT, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and the University of California San Diego.

Harvard University is once again the champion of citations, with 203 researchers on the list. They are followed by Stanford (103), Chinese Academy of Sciences (101), Max Planck Society (73), Broad Institute (60), UC-Berkeley (58), and Washington University in St. Louis (55).

The annual ranking has seen a surge in Chinese authors, with 636 researchers on the highly cited list this year, up from 482 in 2018. The United Kingdom, Germany and Netherlands saw slight declines.

Web of Science also named 57 “Citation Laureates,” from this year's data, those the analyses indicate are of “Nobel class.” Duke has no names on this list for 2019, though highly cited Bob Lefkowitz already has his medal.
