Nominate a Colleague or Student for the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award

Award honors humanitarian service that has affected lives in the community

Nominations are now being accepted for the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award, which will be presented in April to a Duke graduating senior and to a Duke University or Duke Health faculty member, staff or graduate/professional student for their service to the community.

The New York Southern Society established the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards in 1925 in memory of Sullivan, a southerner who became a prominent lawyer, businessman and philanthropist in New York in the late 19th century. The award seeks to perpetuate the excellence of character and humanitarian service of Sullivan by recognizing such qualities as:

  • Recognition of selflessness
  • Generosity of service
  • Nobility of character
  • Person of integrity
  • Depth of spirituality

To recommend a member of the Duke community for either category, submit a letter of nomination describing the candidate's "characteristics of heart, mind, and conduct as evidence of a spirit of love and helpfulness to other men and women."  Give specific examples of how this individual's actions have directly affected the lives of others.

The nomination form is on the Provost's website. Nominations are due by March 1.

Nominations of Duke undergraduates (the student must be a senior) should be sent to Domonique Redmond, Duke Community Service Center, Box 90827 or by email to dredmond@duke.edu.

Faculty, staff, or graduate/professional student nominations should be sent to Sam Miglarese, Office of Community Affairs, Box 90433 or by email to sam.miglarese@duke.edu.
