Former Catalan President Artur Mas To Speak At Duke Nov. 28

Talk is free and open to the public

Artur Mas Artur Mas, the former president of the Catalonia region of Spain (2010-2016) will speak at Duke University’s Perkins Library on Wednesday, Nov. 28.

The 5:30 p.m. event -- a partnership between Duke Program in American Grand Strategy and the Duke Center for International and Global Studies -- will focus on the challenge of leadership in fractious nation states. The talk is free and open to the public; no tickets are required.

Parking is available in the Bryan Center Parking Deck for an hourly rate.

Duke professor Giovanni Zanalda, an economic historian and director of the Duke Center for International and Global Studies, will interview Mas.

“The conversation with President Mas will appeal to students, scholars and members of the community not only interested in recent developments in Catalonia, but also in the broader question of how to deal with the waves of populism and nationalism that have been gaining traction in Europe as well as in other regions of the world in the last few years,” Zanalda said.

"The question of how Spain and Catalonia manage their differences over time will resonate within all of the European community,” said Ambassador Patrick Duddy, a former career diplomat now teaching at Duke.
