Enjoy Live Theater with a Discount
Save on the North Carolina Theatre’s 2018-19 season
As the first orchestra notes play during a North Carolina Theatre show, Derek Robinson always expects goosebumps all over his skin.
He refers to the intense feeling while seeing a live performance as a “musical theater moment."
“There’s an amazing element to seeing theater where it’s not quite the same every night and it’s happening in the moment in front of you,” said Robinson, director of internal auditing for Duke University Health System. “It’s like watching a heightened version of life with singing and dancing.”
For the past four years, Robinson has used the Duke employee discount to buy tickets to North Carolina Theatre performances. Duke staff and faculty save 10 to 35 percent on ticket purchases for the 2018-19 season.
Performances at the theater include a mix of locally produced shows and national tours. Shows are at the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium or the A.J. Fletcher Opera Theater in Raleigh.
“You’re seeing people on stage who live here full-time or young people who grew up here and are just starting their careers,” Robinson said. “We’re lucky enough to be in a community that has a really vibrant theater scene.”
Robinson typically goes to shows with friends or his kids, who are 6, 10 and 12 years old. He plans to buy a four-ticket package, saving about $50 with the discount.
“Duke cares enough about art and thinks it’s important enough in our lives to figure out how to make it work economically for us,” Robinson said. “That’s a testament to how Duke takes care of its employees and enriches our employees’ lives.”
Duke employees can also take advantage of discounts to the Durham Performing Arts Center. Staff and faculty can use the Super Group discount for about 10 percent off tickets.
