Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to Speak at Duke Nov. 5

Event at Penn Pavilion is free and open to the public

Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will speak at Duke University’s Penn Pavilion Monday, Nov. 5.

The 6 p.m. event -- the Duke Program in American Grand Strategy’s fall 2018 Dave and Kay Phillips Family International Lecture -- will focus on the U.S. military in a time of geopolitical strain. The talk is free and open to the public; no tickets are required.

Parking is available in the Bryan Center Parking Deck at an hourly rate.

Valerie Ashby, dean of Duke’s Trinity School of Arts and Sciences, will introduce Dunford.

Peter Feaver, director of American Grand Strategy and professor of political science and public policy at Duke, will interview the general.

“As the United States’ highest-ranking military officer, Gen. Dunford is the principal military adviser to President Trump, Secretary of Defense Mattis and the National Security Council,” Feaver said. “He plays an absolutely critical role on issues of war and peace and is widely respected for his professional expertise, his judgment and his command of the extraordinarily complex set of strategic challenges confronting the United States today.

“We are very fortunate that a leader with his day-to-day responsibilities is able to be with us in person. Dunford’s visit is a high-water mark for the program this year."
